Although
the SAFERjett began providing Human Factors training in 1999, its roots
can be found way back in the early 1970’s under the name of Crew or
Cockpit Resource Management (CRM).
At
the outset, we need to define Crew or Cockpit Resource Management. It
is the effective use of all resources available to the flight crew,
including equipment, technical/procedural skills, and the contributions
of flight crew and others. The objective of CRM is straight-forward: to
use all available resources to ensure safe and efficient flight
operations, while at the same time providing the technical and pilot
skills training that is needed to maintain proficiency in the most
effective way possible.
In
years past, superior proficiency was considered the prime factor in
assessing a pilot’s ability to perform safely. This became known as
"the right stuff".
Whoever
possessed the "right stuff" was regarded in the highest esteem. Yet
analysis of air carrier accidents and incidents over the last 20 years
has confirmed that at least 70% of those accidents can be attributed to
inadequacies in leadership qualities, communication skills, crew-
coordination and decision-making. In these accidents and incidents a
lack of the "right stuff" was not a factor. Instead, these accidents
and incidents involved inadequate management and use of the various
resources available to the crew.
